    Sr. Margaret Carney was appointed St. Bonaventure University's twentieth president in June of 2004. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Sr. Margaret holds a bachelor's degree from Duquesne University, and a master's degree from the Franciscan institute. She was also the first woman to receive a doctoral degree from the Franciscan University in Rome. Sr. Margaret has taught at the Franciscan Institute of Asia in the Philippines, at the Antonianum in Rome,  and in Canada, Italy, England, Ireland and Japan. She served as the general superior for her community, The Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence Of God, in Pittsburg , PA.  In 1999 Sr. Margaret became the director of the Franciscan Institute and dean of the School of Franciscan Studies. In 2003, she added Senior Vice President for the Franciscan Charism to her duties.

    Sr. Margaret has written many publications. In 2001 she was chosen by the editors of the new Encyclopedia of Monasticism to write a piece describing the traditions of the Poor Clares, women of the Third Order tradition, and the recurring phenomenon of solitary Franciscan women living as hermits and recluses. She was honored by the Franciscan Federation in 2002 for her work on the writing of the Rule for the Third Order Regular.

    During her tenure as president, the university obtained accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The university switched to provost governance. The campus grew to include the Richter Center for recreation, the Walsh Science Center, Cafe La Verna, major renovations to the Magnano Center/Hickey Dining Hall and Shay/Loughlen dormitories, the construction of the William E. and Ann L. Swan Business Center and the rare books addition to Friedsam Library. Fred Handler Baseball Park was renovated with a new all-weather field and facilities and Bob Lanier Court was dedicated. After her retirement the Thomas Merton Center/University Ministries building was replaced by the McGinley-Carney Center for Franciscan Ministry.

The Franciscan Health Care Professions program began in 2006 which grew into the School of Health Professions.

The Bonagany Street Festival was established in 2005 to help bring together "town and gown".

The Damietta Center andFirst Year Experience programs were created in 2006.

The Anniversary Campaign for St. Bonaventure began in 2005 and the 150th anniversary of the university was celebrated culminating in a convocation attended by members of the Pamfilo da Magliano and Devereux families as well as other dignitaries.
