Pugliese
named vice provost for student life
Dr. Stephen Pugliese
has been named vice provost for student life, ending a 10-month search.
He begins his new job June 1.
Currently the vice president for student affairs at Immaculata University
near Philadelphia, Pugliese also served for three years as dean of students
and three years as director of student activities and leadership development
at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa., as well as director of housing
and residence life at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. All three
are Catholic colleges.
“St. Bonaventure’s commitment to the student experience, both inside
and outside the classroom, really attracted me,” said Pugliese, a 1988
graduate of Kutztown (Pa.) University. He earned his master’s degree
at Villanova University and his doctorate in human development and higher
education administration from Marywood in 2006.
Pugliese has been warmed by the welcome he’s received, both during the
interview process and since he’s been hired.
“The community atmosphere while I was on campus, and in my interactions
since accepting the position, has been terrific,” he said.
Pugliese was instrumental in helping Immaculata move from an all-women’s
college to a co-ed institution in 2005.
“Working on transitional issues for Immaculata has made me a better
prepared administrator in creating processes and working with assessment
of programs to strengthen the student experience,” he said.
Pugliese will report to Dr. Michael Fischer, provost and vice president
for academic affairs.
“Steve brings with him a broad range of experience as a student life
professional,” said Fischer. “That experience will only enhance our
already deeply committed and talented student life staff.”
Dr. Fischer lauded the year-long efforts of Dr. Roger Keener, who served
as interim vice president for student life since June 1, 2007.
“We’re indebted to Roger for his willingness to serve, and serve so
admirably,” Fischer said. “His ability to tackle such a major role while
maintaining his leadership at The Counseling Center was of tremendous
service to the University and particularly to our students.”

Nikolaou
chosen as student speaker for Commencement 2008
St.
Bonaventure University senior Stephanie Nikolaou of Rochester will address
her classmates and guests as the 2008 student speaker during the University’s
148th Commencement Exercises May 11.
She said her address will offer insight to her classmates “on how we
can all make use of the values of St. Bonaventure in a contemporary
world.”
The speech, she said, “is not a compass, map, or how-to, but a reminder
to discover, to foster relationships in our communities and to never
overlook our individual worth. The commentary is not a reflection of
on my own achievements as an undergraduate but is motivation for a class
that has already excelled at so much.”
Nikolaou is pursuing a major in journalism/mass communication and a
minor in theater at St. Bonaventure.
Active in the campus theater program, Nikolaou regularly appeared in
SBU Theater productions and is a member of Alpha Psi Omega (National
Theater Fraternity). During her senior year, she created and produced
a documentary celebrating the history of theater at the University.
Nikolaou has served in leadership positions with a number of campus
organizations, including Student Government Association vice president
for public relations, co-director of public relations and managing editor
of the music magazine “The Buzzworthy,” a disc jockey at 88.3 The Buzz,
coordinator of the Orientation Team, anchor for SBU-TV, a member of
the American Advertising Federation chapter, and a member of the SBU
Dance Team.
She also served as the student representative to a number of University
committees, including membership on the Board of Trustees Marketing
Committee, BonAlumnus Editorial Board, and Vice Provost for Student
Life Search Committee.
Following graduation, Nikolaou will pursue a master’s degree in theatre
education at Emerson College in Boston.
Commencement Exercises will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 11, in the
Reilly Center Arena.
(Nikolaou, daughter of Jeanne and Mark Harrington, is a graduate of
Aquinas Institute).
